This unit introduces students to the key political, cultural and economic issues confronting Indigenous peoples in Australia as well as internationally. By examining what racism means in the context of the social justice agenda, the unit explores such issues as equality, self-determination, segregation, structural violence, vilification, human rights, and political representation. The unit begins with an in-depth examination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander political affairs in Australia since the 1967 Referendum, before examining key political issues confronting Indigenous and First Nations peoples in Latin America, North America, Asia, and Africa.
